If there’s one thing that video games need, it’s commercial breaks. After all, who doesn’t get sick of being immersed in an interactive experience after a few hours? Every now and then, it’s nice to get booted out of your match to watch a soft drink ad, right? Apparently, that’s exactly what Sony thinks.
This patent, filed by Sony, is titled “Advertisement Scheme for Use with Interactive Content.” In layman’s terms, it means “Scheme for Interrupting Your Game and Shoving a Bullshit Ad Down Your Throat.”
Don’t believe me? Read the actual patent explanation:
Sony does note that the game would slow down or warn you that gameplay was about to stop, then display the ad. So at least they’re being classy about it.“A method for use in advertising includes initiating playing of interactive content, suspending playing of the interactive content, displaying an advertisement, and resuming playing of the interactive content.”
Luckily, placing advertisements in games will probably make them cheaper.
Right.
