The first time I played Chrono Trigger was on a SNES emulator several years ago. I hadn't read any reviews or seen any ratings of the game yet. CT captured me immediately with its interesting story, epic sense of scale, colorful characters, intuitive battle system, uncluttered menus, great graphics (for the time), and one of the best game soundtracks to date.
In my opinion, the original SNES version (which the Wii VC emulates) is the best out of the SNES, DS, and PS1 renditions. The PS1 version has terrible loading times, and although it does have the anime cutscenes, they sort of interrupt the game and some of them are not that great to begin with (the ending cutscene comes to mind). And sure, the DS version has extras, but it has some changes for the worse (e.g. removing Frog's dialect) and it's much more satisfying to play a game on a TV screen where the picture and sound are bigger and better. So the SNES version still wins in my book.
The Wii VC faithfully emulates the original SNES version. Not only that, but it actually works well with a GameCube controller. The 360-degree control stick allows you to more easily move characters diagonally than with a control pad, and in case you need to use a control pad for whatever reason, it's on the controller too.
Get this game for the Wii VC especially if you have never played CT before. It's widely considered one of the best games and RPGs to date, and chances are you will enjoy it.
