Nintendo respond to PETA anti Mario pro-fur claim

A Nintendo spokesperson has responded to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals claim that the Tanooki Suit, which features prominently in the forthcoming Super Mario 3DS, endorses animal cruelty. Here’s what Nintendo had to say:

“Mario often takes the appearance of certain animals and objects in his games.”


“These have included a frog, a penguin, a balloon and even a metallic version of himself. These lighthearted and whimsical transformations give Mario different abilities and make his games fun to play.


“The different forms that Mario takes make no statement beyond the games themselves.”

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has confessed in a statement that their anti Tanooki suit campaign was in fact just a joke. Clearly they managed to troll quite a few people including a variety of mainstream news outlets.

Mario fans: Relax! PETA’s game was meant to be tongue-in-cheek, a fun way to call attention to a serious issue, that raccoon dogs are skinned alive for their fur. We wish real-life tanukis could fly or swat enemies away with their tails and escape from those who profit from their skins. You can help them by never buying real fur.

I dunno... That sure sounds like they're just trying to cover their tracks to me. I've never heard of PETA joking around. I figure they found out just how much of a mistake they made trying to go up against a giant like Nintendo (and what's worse, Mario, the biggest IP in the video game industry) and decided to try and play it off as a joke to avoid the inevitable backlash of shear rage from the video game community.

I was thinking the same thing, PETA are not known for back tracking on themselves once they've set their sights on a target, plus, I dont see how their 'joke' was at all funny.

At the end of the day it looks like you said, they realised they were treading on the wrong toes this time and tried to cover their asses.
