Patrick Soderlund, head of EA Games label has told Venture Beat that the company is pursuing the idea of introducing subscription based services for some of its forthcoming games. Activision has already attempted something similar with Call of Duty Elite, and EA games could follow the same path.

I think its fair to say that were looking at that. Like all other companies, were looking at how we can maximise our investment in this and get the most out of our investment and get more people playing this product. That may take us to different places, but were not really talking about where that is yet.

The only reason why they do this is because people are willing to pay for it. That's why I thought it was complete Bull**** when they announced the Elite thing CoD. So now every other company will follow suit. You see games like Marvel vs Capcom, Dead Space2, Forza they all want subscriptions I think its dumb cuz we already have to pay for Live. Just my opinion though

There in lies the problem: when these companies see someone else get away with charging for something, they want in on that revenue.

Once they saw that tens of millions of people were willing to pay for the privilege of playing the games they've already paid for, on the console they've already paid for, using the internet they've already paid for, they realized they may as well get in on the action... It's a race to the bottom, much like Facebook, Microsoft, Google, and others turning your privacy into a Caligulan roman bath house.... Just my $0.02
