Kickstarted sequel to XBLA tower defence hit from co-developers of Counter Strike: Global Offensive
Fans of tower defence may rejoice, as the sequel to popular XBLA and early Games with Gold freebie Defense Grid: The Awakening has been confirmed for an Xbox One release by developers Hidden Path Entertainment in conjunction with publisher 505 Games.
Originally, funding towards the sequel was originally proposed during a Kickstarter campaign for an expansion pack for the original game as a stretch goal back in August 2012. The target wasn't met by the campaign, but luckily enough a mysterious investor stepped in to provide the required investment to release Defense Grid 2.
Now publisher 505 Games have stepped in to help bring the sequel to home consoles including the Xbox One, as announced on the Defense Grid 2 blog, promising that "Gamers will battle to protect their power cores on multiple locations throughout DG2. They'll have new and familiar towers at their disposal as they beat back both new and established threats."
The game will feature both co-operative and competitive multiplayer modes, and will be available via download from Xbox Live. No word on release date or pricing as of yet but the PC version is still pencilled in for a "2014" release, so fingers crossed it won't be too long a wait. Here's an early trailer from August last year:
nterestingly enough, Hidden Path - who previously worked on Counter Strike: Global Offensive for XBLA with Valve - was noted as one of the first [email protected] developers, so whether this new deal with 505 Games would have been this or they're working on something else too is yet to be seen.
