The Xbox IS Banned In Germany
Submitted by Demonchild; Yesterday
Remember last month, we told you that Microsoft was fighting a fight with Motorola over patents? Yes, the very same Motorola that's going at it with Apple. Unfortunately, Microsoft has lost this fight.
A court has ruled in Motorola's favor over the claim that Microsoft violated their patents when it came to the video compression software in use in both Windows 7 and the Xbox 360. Due to this, Microsoft is now required to cease sales of both products within the boundaries of Germany.
Bad news for Xbox 360 users over there. Scurry to your local game store and pick one up before it's too late. With brand new consoles slowly disappearing, will you be importing a Xbox now or going over to the PS3?

I live in Germany right now, and thankfully I am on a military post which does not have to abide by that ban.

Based on this news alone, I don't feel too bad for Germany. This late in the race, nobody's going to get a 360 that doesn't already have one. Now, here's the kicker: if Xbox is banned in Germany, doesn't that mean XBL service is also banned there? Now THAT I would feel bad about, because everybody that bought their 360 will no longer be able to play online.
If it's just selling the consoles that's banned, no big deal. If it's the entire service, that's another story entirely!

the issue was suppossed to be the video compression software so i guess it would depends if live uses the same setup or if its the console itself that does all the compression if live uses a different form of compression or leaves it to the hardware itself live should be fine

I can't imagine why XBL would use any different compression methods. It makes sense to have everything use the same method, that way it's all compatible. I imagine XBL is gonna be taking some hits in the near future in Germany.

Hah poor Germans, but I agree with Emerald, there wouldn't be that many people buying there first console at this late in the game.

So if they banned the console does that means players from Germany won't be able to connect to xbox live as well

I think so. They aren't banning the hardware per say, but the software it uses. If XBL uses the same software, then the whole service falls under the court decision, and Germany won't be able to log onto XBL. Again, it's only maybe.
I really hope that peeps are still able to connect to XBL in Germany. I may move there in the next couple months!

banning the sale of xbox consoles is pathetic, its like motorola have thrown their teddy in the corner and said if your not going to pay for the software then no-one gets to play. Motorola = attitude of a Spoilt brat.

My wife who is in Germany right now said XBL is still working. We have internet from a German IP. I am thinking this is just the sale of the consoles. Games and accessories are still for sale all over the place.

Cheers for that:) yeah I swear just going through his writing and you always pick up great quotes. One that is in my head from the Spanish Civil war is when he is talking about not shooting some guy because he was running and holding his pants up. Cracked me up to the point I had to stop reading:)
Just wish my school days we actually read books (we never touched animal farm or 1984) instead of being forced to watch bowling for columbine for the millionth time (we watched that so many times that I lost count)

That's good to know. I mean, don't get me wrong, it makes absolutely no sense, but I'm happy for Germany that Motorola is thinking with their ass instead of their head.
Of course, it wouldn't be too much trouble for MS to do a large-scale system update and just change the video compression software, either. That is, unless, when they say "video compression software" they also mean the software used in the games as well, in which case an update for each game MIGHT also be in order. Motorola's just being child, but MS is being stupid.
That said, unless LIVE uses different software, I still am not counting out the possibility of Motorola striking against the online service as well.
