Ever wondered why Minecraft’s cows have both horns and udders? Why its chickens have bright red rooster ‘wattles’ beneath their chins yet lay eggs? Here’s why – Notch intended Minecraft to be “a game where gender doesn’t even exist”.

The Minecraft creator says he regrets jokingly answering “Steve” when asked for the name of the game’s protagonist.

“The human model is intended to represent a Human Being,” he said in a blog post this morning. “Not a male Human Being or a female Human Being, but simply a Human Being.

“The blocky shape gives it a bit of a traditional masculine look, but adding a separate female mesh would just make it worse by having one specific model for female Human Beings and male ones. That would force players to make a decisions about gender in a game where gender doesn’t even exist.”

Brilliantly, Notch notes that because all mobs are of the same gender, every character and animal in Minecraft is homosexual. He adds: “Take THAT, homophobes!”

Yesterday, we learned that Minecraft studio Mojang were working on an FPS project with another developer, only to cancel it to “avoid external dependencies”. With one mystery solved, another emerges from the shadows. Back to the Mystery Van, gang.
