First of all i hope this is the right place to post this, apologies if it isnt.
Ive been watching my friend play dark souls on the pc for quite a while now so i thought id give it a go, now little did i realise that when he was playing it he had a modded save which would explain why he made everything look so easy. I have started a new game as a sorcerer and getting smacked around left right and centre. Ive defeated the taurus demon and thats it lol.
I was basically hoping some of you had some tips or kind words of inspiration lol.
Thanks,
Scott.

Try searching Youtube for a guy named Seraphim17, he's got lots of Dark Souls content and following his lead with help you get better at the game!

What the others are telling you IS the way to go. I did not mod for some time, I watched a lot of You Tube and flew through the game after that. Once you are through the first time it is all easy now for many more runs through the game and so much more fun. NOW mod and take it to the next level of fun.

Like the others have said, Youtube is really the way to go for a new player. Seeing others fail/succeed can really help alot.

You'll die many, many times. It's normal in this game. You just need to practise. You can also try save editors if you want, or summon phantoms. They can help you a lot :P.

Dying is pretty much what you're expected to do. Always make sure to increase your parameters and improve your equipment in the beginning, don't carry around large numbers of souls all the time. GameFAQs pretty much helped me through any rough patch I had with the game, but I bought it at release and the people on the forums there were more helpful... Now it's a menagerie of in-jokes and stupid posts the likes of which I can no longer comprehend or tolerate, but the walkthroughs listed under FAQs are still extremely helpful.

Like many of the other members have said, dying will happen. A lot. The developers want you to die. Dying in Dark Souls has been described as less of a punishment and more of a core game mechanic. Even at the max legit level (early 600s) you will still run the risk of being killed by even the beginning enemies.
Surviving is less about level grinding (though that is still important) and more about sharpening your skill as a player. The game is set up so that you HAVE to fail, and you're expected to learn by failing over and over again. Sort of like how you learn in real life. If you're trying something and it isn't working, then you need to try something else; the game doesn't make attacks bounce off enemies or give you a little message when a strategy doesn't work like other games do, it just kills you. The same goes for exploring: the game will only give you a vague idea of what your objective is, and then it will simply drop you off and leave you there, sort of like real life; you're expected to figure out what to do on your own by exploring. And failing.
FAQs are great for finding out where you need to go next, but you're gonna have to figure out how to defeat the enemies yourself, even if the FAQ tries to help. My advice would be to tough it out and play the game as it was meant to be played. Not for that "get the full experience" nonsense that other people might spout, but so that it can toughen you up and get you in the mindset of beating it properly.
Just remember how you coped with playing Castlevanie III or Mega Man II, and you should be good to go. And if those games don't do it for you, I guarantee that Super Mario Bros Lost Levels will get you going. ;)
