View Full Version : Xbox 720: More used game ban evidence emerges

The Xbox 720 remains unannounced, but today, some more details have emerged about the next-gen console, and they don’t paint an entirely pretty picture for gamers. A new leak suggests that games won’t run off discs themselves, and will have to be installed first – which could be part of a rumoured plan to block used games on the machine.

Website Vgleaks has published screenshots of the Xbox Development Kit, the software which guides developers through making games for Microsoft’s next console, and several sites including The Verge have also confirmed that these are legitimate. The details in the screenshots confirm that you won’t be able to play games straight from a Blu-ray disc on the Xbox 720: they’ll have to be installed onto the hard drive first (“Play from the optical disc will not be supported,” says the XDK).

Now there are pros and cons to this set-up. Games will boot quickly, and the XDK says that it will be possible to begin playing part of the game while it installs – something we’ve heard about before. But it also makes it much easier to block used games: Microsoft could use this and always-on internet verification to make sure that games can not be played on more than one system, something Sony says it will not do with the PS4.

Used games are a major source of contention in the industry – gamers love being able to sell on their completed titles so that they can buy more, but some publishers view second hand game sales as lost revenue. If Microsoft uses this technology in the Xbox 720 – and it’s worth noting that the XDK shots are dated from last year, so things could have changed – it could find itself very unpopular with fans.

No way can they go through with this and have success... For one how big would the hard drives have to come w/ for the blu ray size demand, and also companies like gamestop, and gamefly, redbox who rely on the used game market would join the fight against it. I personally would not buy it if it had these restrictions

Agreed. This will have a reverse effect in sales, and if it's true I'm sure they won't make this widely known. I already didn't plan on getting a 720 but if it's true, this just makes me want one even less.

Once again let us sit down in the front row and watch the industry point a shotgun at its own arse and gleefully pull the trigger. They will turn away so many gamers and drive them straight into the arms of the very pirates that their crappy DRM schemes have done for years already. Someone needs to wake up and smell the fraggin coffee.

Don't forget that Microsoft signed a partnerships contract with EA. EA only wants one thing which is money. They hate it when people buy their games pre-owned cause of that they don't get any money out of it (besides adding a stupid online pass). I'm pretty scared that something like this is going to happen. Maybe a DRM or "online-only" to play games...

Even though EA's CEO John Riccitiello resigned does not mean that EA's world will become a paradise for gamers who buy pre-owned games or want to be able to access to all the content from a SP game without needing something like an online pass (Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning).

As for me I really hope they don't pull off a stunt like this.

I agree a move like this will just cause people to jump ship.

i agree the fact that they may stop pre-owned games from running on other console will undoubtedly kill the xbox franchise off if they do it, if it happens i for one will not get one due to the fact that i like to sell my compleated or dissappointing games as most now have too much hype thrown at them like duke nukem and more recently deadspace 3 for instance, i would rather go to Playstaion 4 and have a slightly worse online experience than have a good online and almost no game satisfaction.

I might have to go with the ps4 instead of xbox 720.

I have no problem with this. it just gives me more reason to by a PS4 or stay with my 360. I'm sure Sony will step up with their console online knowing what needs to be fixed, upgraded, and added to their consoles. also as long as they stay free then I have no problem with that

I think someone posted something about EA last week, about there net market dropping in value.. If I remember it right said something about used games.... As far as I know its all EA's fault. If this was to happen it would be....

As I said before, I don't see this going forward...

I wasn't planning on going next-gen, I didn't get a 360 till 2009 and just bought a new one today but if i do go nextgen it would definitely be PS4 because for one they have that rumor of you having to have an always on connection to play the games... First Kinect... Now this.... D-Day for video games is approaching. By the time Gears of War 15 is revealed, no one would even care LOL

Hey everyone get over it, if it happens then it happens feel free to not purchase a "720" but know you will miss out on all the exclusive titles that come with it. This is simply business, the game companies loose money on used games so it only makes sense they do this. I for one don't care at all.

its only a matter of time before gaming is digital, ie you will buy games online and install it straight to your console (iphone etc do this already).
The difficulty here is the transition phase... like when we went from cassette to cartridge to cd to dvd disk to blue ray disk.
Change is never easy, but necessary

When this generation started PSN was garbage. Slow, cluttered interface, laggy games, poor features etc. As the generation has gone on it has steadily improved and now if your willing to pay the same as gold you can free retail games from them every month, plus the same on your Vita and auto-patches. Whas has MS brought to XBL? A load of features like netflix, facebook, youtube etc, they are free on any other device you can think of but ms charges you for the privilege of using them?

For myself, and many others, its too late to start jumping ship now, i love my 360, got over 120k score, mostly legit, but Sony have really improved with the PS3 and the PS4 looks great, I think a new generation may see a lot of people swapping sides again.

This generation may be the one people look back on as the slip up sony made, rememeber what game changers the PS1 and PS2 where?

You have hit the nail on the head let me explain why, for my RGH I have 2 hard drives the 250 gig internal which came with the console & the 2tb external I bought just for games. The internal Hdd has no games installed is full with DLC, Saves & other content like apps & TU's, the external is also full with just games mainly rips & xbla. Here is the kicker, because I can't possibly fit all my library on my external I have backed up my entire collection on another external & when I want to play a specific game I have to transfer the game over before hand which is a pain but it must be done because any drive larger than 2tb loads too slow on my console. All in I have over 300 games the new 720 is going to need a massive hdd for us to build a collection. It can be done with the new 720 if they have USB 3.0 that way a compatible external can be used with a massive storage capacity but it will be expensive.

Agreed, and to be honest nobody has the money to spend ££££ss on new games, I heavily rely on used games, to be honest I think most of collection is pre-owned.

Can't say I'm too big on this idea. I've never been much of a used-games type of guy--at least not since the N64/PS1 days, but I still don't like it. What I like even less is this whole always-on online deal that I just began reading about. I don't even use online functions as it is in games, so to be forced to always have that stuff going isn't something that's going to make me too eager to buy a new console.

100% agree with this, I don't play online period, because I don't want to deal with all the idiots.

Definitely not a fan of this idea.
Although I am sure that most retailers would refuse to even sell a console that blocks used games, since used games is where they get a lot of their profits from. If this rumor is true, then it is a terrible, terrible idea that will royally screw the gaming industry and gamers in the long run.
Damn .. Looks like I am going to be saving a lot of money on games and consoles for the next 5-7 years.

This is seriously messed up, if true. When I'm at my hostel I have broadband but during our vacations when I'm back home in my village all I have is a stupid dial-up connection with a pathetic bandwidth of around 25kbps. This just wouldn't work for me.

Hopefully xbox is smart enough to realize how bad this will backfire for them. If they do plan to go through with this then it looks like I won't be buying an xbox but a PS4 instead.

Yep,you can't swing a dead cat w/out hitting a tv or blu-ray player that offers these features for free.I won't pay MS $50 a year,or whatever it is,to use them.If MS makes true these rumors then,I really don't know what I'll do,as I hate the ps controller, and don't think much of their exclusives. My ps3 is only used for netflix/hulu plus.Guess maybe build a gaming pc and play whatever supports a control pad.

How do they think this will work without

A) the 720/durango/whatever being a digital distribution only platform

or

B) collusion from at least Sony and maybe Nintendo to also implement a used game lockout mechanic on the PS4 and WiiU?

I would hate it if they did this but it not going to hurt them it would hurt games stores. Microsoft would be fine though even the people that say they want buy games would still buy new games when it is all said in done with.

I heard about this some time ago, and honestly, if it goes through, I might be going to PS4 route. Even though I love Microsoft and all, that's a bit of a kick in the nuts. As that's a large chunk of extra money I'd have to put out.
