At last year's E3, one of the 3DS demos on display was a clip of Solid Snake sneaking through the jungle, complete with crocodile encounter and deadly bug swarm. And that's about the last time we got any new information about Konami's plans for Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3DS. However, given that this is a port of the 2004 PlayStation 2-exclusive Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, we can infer that it will follow the same plot. (SPOILER ALERT for the rest of this paragraph.) Snake Eater, which is set in 1964, serves as a prequel to the Metal Gear series. CIA agent Naked Snake is sent into the Soviet jungle to aid a defecting scientist named Sokolov. Things of course go awry, and Snake finds himself pitted against Colonel Volgin and his former mentor/now defector The Boss. As one might expect in a Metal Gear game, there are plenty of double-crosses and discoveries of parental origins and crazy connections. Camouflage is a big component of the original Snake Eater; Snake has several different camo suits available, and a camouflage index indicates how hidden he is to his enemies. The original Snake Eater also includes a mini-game called Snake vs. Monkey, where Snake must try catch as many Ape Escape monkeys as possible. Completing levels in the mini-game unlocks special items that Snake can then use in the main story.
Last year's demo was just a non-interactive video, but this year we expect to be able to play the game for the first time. 3D visuals should have a cool effect on combat -- in the PS2 version of the game, Snake is able to put enemies in chokeholds and then either knock them out or interrogate them, which would be awesome to watch in three dimensions.

Kojima Productions has a history of taking full advantage of a system's hardware, so we're also hoping to learn about new elements that capitalize on features like the 3DS' gyroscope and Street Pass.
