What you saw leaked was taken from an old, internal planning presentation."
The rumoured Metro Redux for Xbox One is a Thing, not a flight of irradiated fancy, publisher Deep Silver has confirmed - but the project is "a lot more exciting" than you might deduce from this weekend's leaks, which are apparently based on ancient presentation materials.

According to said materials, Redux is down for release in July 2014 and comprises an "enhanced" version of Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light, plus all of Last Light's DLC, an official soundtrack and some art cards. Speaking to Eurogamer, Deep Silver decried much of this as "hypothetical", but admitted that the report contained "nuggets of truth".

"Metro Redux. You may have heard of it... even though you probably shouldn't have!" reads the statement in question. "We could issue a 'We do not comment on rumour and speculation' statement and pretend this never happened. They're pretty boring to read. They're also pretty boring to write.

"So we're going to comment on rumour and speculation instead. Is Metro Redux real? Yes. We never made any secret of 4A's desire to bring Metro to the latest generation of console hardware."

"But what you saw leaked was taken from an old, internal planning presentation, containing some nuggets of truth but a lot of hypothetical ideas and place holder material.14469"(Eagle eyed fans will recognize the artwork on the 'packshot' as the art from the original Russian edition of the Metro 2033 novel. And that 'logo' is just the old Metro 2033 logo with the '2033' scrubbed out and 'Redux' added...)

"As you can see, we're not quite ready to reveal 4A Games' first next-gen console project, but we will be making an announcement this side of E3. And we think the reality is a lot more exciting than the out-dated material that got leaked shows, and we're itching to share it with you. Just not yet."

It's possible that the new console versions of Metro 2033 and Last Light will consist simply of the PC versions running at higher settings. "This is a studio where you give them a hardware limit and they'll expand to fill it and push it," THQ's former head of global communications Huw Beynon told OXM before Last Light's release.

"Higher resolution, slighter higher frame rate at that resolution, a few fancier lighting and graphical effects, whatever we can eke out the very latest generation of graphics cards for PC. But all the fundamentals - dynamic lighting, physics and AI - everything that has a material impact on the game is identical across platforms."14470
