You see that big "Rumor" tag in the headline.
Good; keep that in mind as you read this story, because this one could be too good to be true. A persistent batch of rumors from the tech world suggest that Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 operating system will allow users to play Xbox 360 games on their computers.

Teknylate (http://www.teknylate.com/2011/07/05/xbox360-games-on-p/) reports from an unrevealed source that if you have Windows 8 installed on your PC, you'll be able to pop Xbox 360 discs directly into your computer tower and load them up as though it were a console. Supposedly gamers will also be able to access their Xbox 360 dashboard and Xbox Live services on PC.

The rumor suggests that players will need to pay a fee to unlock this feature on Windows 8, although its unclear if this just means subscribing to Xbox Live Gold or paying on top of that subscription. It's important to remember that this is all rumor and speculation at this point, but various similar rumors have been circulating for several months now.

Microsoft has yet to announce an official release date for Windows 8, but the company is expected to continue unveiling features for the operating system in the next few months. Hopefully that means we'll know one way or another whether this rumor is legitimate soon.

well i hope this rumor is true since the 360s are still suffering from the RROD maybe this can migrate people to gaming on their pcs more often

I'd easily call it 100% bullshit off the bat, but there are strings related to Xbox 360 error handling in the Windows 8 kernel. Unlikely that it's gonna be released though.

Would require emulation. Most if not all every day use computers do not have enough power to emulate something like an Xbox 360 game at a playable speed. Its not going to happen, its a rumor and nothing more. Why would Microsoft do that anyway? It would easily allow pirated games, and decrease sales of the 360 by a landslide.

IF this actually happens I'll actually be willing to go out and buy a copy of Windows 8 on day one.

The graphics card would be easy to over come, just require a 1GB minimum which is pretty common in gaming rigs today and at least 2GB of RAM, The biggest hurtle I see is how much power would it take to emulate a PowerPC chip.

Xbox 1 would be even easier to support since it was mostly off the shelf parts.
Personally I would love to see Microsoft add Xbox support to all future versions of Windows so I can take my games and play them where every I want. They could do a Game Edition similar to what they did with Media Center Edition with XP :)

Im afraid to say it's already easy enough to pirate games onto the 360- I don't endorse it, but then I also don't endorse video game retailers rushing games out for 60 dollars that have a ridiculous amount of bugs. Heck, I'd buy a rehash of Morrowind, for 60 bucks- It had more than enough content to keep me going for the last 8 years. Update it's visuals and I'd be set. Been my go to game since it came out. I wonder, though. Assuming this rumor is true, will Windows 8 also play traditional Xbox games as well?

Though an interesting idea, I agree with several other posters that this is something from the rumor mill. Microsoft would lose quite a bit of income if this were to happen due to piracy of games and they just can't afford to let that happen. Emulation of an Xbox 360 game, though interesting, would be very difficult even with a decent high speed computer with multiple processors.

And Zyrius, I could not agree with you more when it comes to games being put out with flaws and bugs. I miss the old days when games were at most about $40.00. I just can't see, no matter what the game, spending over that for a game that will price drop to $40.00 from $60.00 in three to six months. I can wait! lol

As Nice as this would be. I don't see it happening. I mean it would be like cutting off one of there income's. Still it would be nice

I remain skeptical, but even if true I wonder if I would get much use out of it given my proclivity to confine my video game-playing to the couch.

Yep, sounds like BS to me. There's no way that Mircosoft would ever do this, all i could think of is maybe Cross Gaming between Xbox360 Gamers and PC Gamers like they tried doing with Shadowrun.

im actually looking forward to see how this plays out. Just curious why M$ made this move. It might actually hurt console sales if you can just go out and buy the game and play it without the need for a console. Might make it easier to mod saves and make homebrew possible. Time will tell

I'd love to see the live interface on my pc. Since XBList stopped working I have to check xbox.com from time to time to see who's on since I've yet to find a replacement program. Of course gaming with friends right from my desktop would be a plus if I didn't want to play in the living room.

I don't know if it's a good idea... I mean each game is a different game.. it's like you try to play a game with an emulator... For example FFX PS2 runs great but Gran Turismo 4 PS2 is very Slow, almost 2 frames/second... hmm... I don't think that's true

Wouldn't this be bad? I meant most piracy occurs within the PC gaming community. It would be a bad move from a business point of view, just sayin'.

This rumor is just someone's pipe dream. Think about it. Microsoft is designing and working on a new console 720. Spending 10's of millions of dollars. Do you really believe that they would sacrifice serious amounts of revenue income from this new machine so that PC/Windows 8 user's can emulate the new 720 but not buy one. I don't think so. I just don't see the revenue/profit/market advantage. And, from a PC point of view, we know we already can buy most big name xbox games to run on our machines. Also, we generaly have better graphics, loading speed and easier access/use of trainers/save game editors, etc. Why would we want to play Xbox games on our PC's in Xbox mode? I would prefer to see Microsoft develop PC games tied to your Xbox live account to earn gamer points/achievements so that I can stop buying a PC and Xbox version of a big name game like ME3.

I hope it's true. Living outside of the US makes it more difficult for me to get games and play games with my State-side friends. In fact, I rarely play my 360 anymore. Most of my friends here Japan are PC gamers.

Oh, and one nice thing about this idea is that a large majority of computers will have the power to play 360 games since it's already 7 year-old hardware.

Mmm... It's okay, but it will promote piracy. Ok, how about this? It'll feature dual-boot? The OS of Xbox bundled with Windows 8?

So it can maximize the memory resources and it'll be use for gaming only? (Am I wrong? But it still depends on the guts of the computer to handle such processing??)

They should give us the same mod rights as pc for the 360. If they release there own level ,game , editors then we wouldnt have mod ourselves. Dlc game editors so people can get more out of the game just like they do on pc. Ill pay for that bc you bring life back.to anold gamethat you havent played in a while. Just a thought.

I can't see this happening. I'm an avid PC gamer and have been for years. There would be people with these pathetic walmart specials that they got for 400 dollars that do it and bitch and whine because it doesn't work for them. There would just be too many different hardware variants that would come into the equation. They wouldn't emulate it. I think they would have developed a way to run it on the hardware but I doubt it would work well. Also there is only one texture map set on xbox 360 games to save space unlike pc which have many because of the different hardware. I would see nothing but problems from a technical standpoint. Although that being said. It would be quite a thing to see.

Well I found a little more information on this. It seems they are porting some current Xbox 360 games to Windows 8, not creating an emulator for them. So from my understanding Windows 8 will have nativity compiled games that use to be only for Xbox 360.

Doubt very much this is true. Microsoft is all about the cash and this would weaken both game markets cash flow.I admit one more than the other but Microsoft is not willing to sacrifice one red cent.

Rumors, like the people who start and spread them, can go to hell. Never believe anything unless it comes from MS.
