Video game trilogies never really end. Just look at Halo and God of War. BioWare's Mass Effect series is also shaping up to follow in those franchises' footsteps, although unlike them Mass Effect 3 will bring a definite close to Commander Shepard's story.

Mass Effect 3 producer Michael Gamble told PC Gamer that when they say Commander Shepard's story is complete, they mean we definitely won't see him again in a Mass Effect. Ever. Still, the Mass Effect universe will continue to evolve, and Mass Effect 3 is being seen as more than just a conclusion. It also serves as a starting point for those new to the action-RPG series.

"We have ambitious plans to continue this franchise going forward," explained BioWare boss Dr. Ray Muzyka. "Mass Effect 3 is simultaneously a couple of different things; a thrilling and epic conclusion to the trilogy as we promised our fans we'd provide for Commander Shepard, but it's also a brand new beginning – it’s an entry point for new fans and it's also a brand new beginning."

Mass Effect 3 is currently slated for a March 2012 release. BioWare has promised to focus on more RPG elements in the third game compared to Mass Effect 2.
