We've known for a while that Super Mario 3D Land features the return of Mario's cherished Tanooki Suit, which powers up the heroic plumber with a furry costume equipped with a powerful swiping tail. But it seems like after all these years, his arch-nemesis is tired of Mario being the only one to use power-ups like that – so Bowser's going to use the raccoon power too.

New footage released during Nintendo's pre-TGS press conference confirmed the odd visual of it in action, but sure enough as Mario advanced toward his most well-known foe you could see that behind Bowser's titanic spiked shell was a little something new. The Tanooki tail has replaced King Koopa's traditional Stegosaurus-esque caboose.

He's not wearing a full Tanooki Suit like Mario (since his spikes would probably rip through the fabric anyway), but the tail is definitely there.

But it is the first time we've seen it attached to Bowser – which raises the question, what will it allow him to do? Will he also gain a spinning attack, to try to swipe at Mario in fast 360s? Will it actually allow him to slowfall through the sky like Mario, counteracting some of that enormous Koopa bulk?

Or will it just be purely aesthetic, and serve no real purpose at all?

We're hoping it's not just for looks, of course, and that the introduction of this element is a sign of long-overdue showdowns to come – Bowser has never before wielded Mario's own power-ups against him in a main series game (just in the cartoons and spin-off titles like Mario Kart). Could we also see showdowns with Frog Suit Bowser, or Cape Feather Bowser, or even Invincible Bowser?
