The little blue blur has claimed the new award within a few months of his 20th birthday. Big year.

The 29th annual GamesMaster Golden Joystick Awards ceremony takes place in London tomorrow, but one winner has already been announced: Sonic the Hedgehog has scooped the Outstanding Contribution Award.

"We are so excited that Sonic has been awarded the first-ever Outstanding Contribution Award at the Golden Joysticks," said Sonic brand director David Corless.

"In today's ever changing market it's rare for a character to last for 5 years – let alone 20. And that's testament to the popularity and longevity of our blue blurred mascot. Since the days of the Mega Drive – he's appeared on most consoles and handhelds going and also made the successful leap into the digital space. This award couldn't have come at a better time as we celebrate Sonic's 20th Anniversary and with the amazing Sonic Generations just around the corner. Here's to the next 20!"

Tomorrow's ceremony at the Westminster Bridge Plaza will see gongs awarded across 14 categories split by genre, as well as recognising best download and mobile games. The most coveted award is in the Ultimate Game of the Year category for which a mammoth 20 games have been nominated.

A record breaking 2.06m votes have been cast to decide the winners, beating last year's total number of votes by over half a million.
