The original Sonic The Hedgehog will be available as a complete, unlockable game in Sonic Generations (http://www.joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations), Sonic Team's Takashi Iizuka said during a panel at Paris Games Week.
Iizuka didn't specify how exactly to unlock Sonic The Hedgehog, but we assume it has something to do with curling into a tight ball and rolling up some loop-the-loops at breakneck speeds. You, not Sonic. This is a really special unlock, so we expect you'll really have to earn it.

Hope they have updated the graphics on it or at least tweaked it somehow or it doesn't really seem worth it. Its already available on XBLA and on the MegaDrive (or Genesis for you NTSC guys) Collection.
I would guess you unlock it by finishing the main game though.

And Sonic Jam for Staurn; and Sega Smash Pack for Dreamcast; and Mega Collection for Gamecube; and Mega Collection Plus for Xbox, PS2, and PC; and Virtual Console for Wii; and iTunes Store for iPods; and it was released for iPhone; and Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection (or Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection for you PAL guys) for 360 and PS3; and Sonic Classic Collection for NDS; and Playstation Network for PS3. Hell, even the Genesis/Mega Drive had Sonic Compilation and 6-Pak. And that's just the official list, I didn't even begin to mention all of the hacked ROMs and fan remakes floating around online! I mean, we don't wanna be here all day... (EDIT: I forgot about Sonic Genesis for GBA, but then again that's probably because I repressed it.)
I want to see Sega do with Sonic1 what Nintendo did for OoT on the 3DS: not just a straight port with possible graphics smoothing, but a full on graphical upgrade! There's no reason we can't see this. If it's going to be a straight port, there are better Sonic games than the first one they could use, like S3&K for example.
As far as unlocking it goes, I'll say probably just beat the game once. I assume the Chaos Emeralds are optional (if Sega really wants to give us the old school experience, they'll make Chaos Emeralds and Super Sonic unlockable instead of just as plot devices) so unlocking Sonic1 may involve getting the Super Sonic ending. But if we'll really have to work for it, it may very well be unlocking all emblems or something similar; if that's the case, it better be a damn good port with some damn good additions! And I'm not talking about fixing the spike bug and adding spin dash, because that's cheap and chinchy! I don't want to waste good time unlocking a game I literally have dozens of copies of already!

Yeah pretty much, all the levels in this one have been in the previous titles. You play as Classic Sonic which is 2D like the original games and then Modern Sonic which is a Sonic Unleashed type 3D version of the level.

I just found out how you unlock Sonic1: there's a skill shop where you can spend skill points earned in the levels on different things (I believe better physics for Classic is one of them, and it needs it desperately) and Sonic1 costs 7777 skill points. Here's some delicious sauce: Sonic Stadium Message Board (http://board.sonicstadium.org/topic/10931-sonic-generations-official-spoiler-topic/page__st__100), and some more: Siliconera (http://www.siliconera.com/2011/10/26/sonic-generations-contains-on-consoles-comes-with-a-port-of-sonic-1/). And that's it. From what I hear, these skill points aren't that easy to come by, so that's what they mean when they say you have to work for it.
Sad. I was hoping SEGA was going to be original with at least one of their unlocks. If it's earned by beating levels or spending points, it's generic. Remember unlocking Super Sonic in Sonic Colors? THAT was something I had to work for.

Well, that's just what the guy said he was able to notice from the screenshot. There will probably be more stuff. At least, I hope so. That's a really short list to be complete.

Yeah there's more, as you go through the game more stuff becomes available to purchase. Haven't really played it much yet but already have unlocked stuff like the water bubble which you earn through playing the challenges.

So yeah. Not only is it just a straight port, but a bad one at that. The sound is the worst bit, but there are gameplay issues and the like as well. No bug fixes (the spike bug is as ugly as ever), and new features (no excuse not to have a spindash), and everything is actually worse (frame skip fail). In this day and age, when everybody and their grandmother already has several copies of Sonic1, is it too much to ask to include the Sonic Jam version every now and then?

I agree, only did the first couple of acts of Green Hill and its awful looking. A smoothing option like on the XBLA version would't have gone a miss.
I suppose they wanted to keep it as original and true to its roots as possible. And yes, the spin dash move would have made a huge difference to the game, trying to get up a small hill in this game can be a nightmare if you haven't built up full speed already.
