View Full Version : Best operating system for my computer

My computer just recently blue-screened on me. I think I know why too: there was a small power outage when my computer was installing updates. I can run it in safe-mode (typing this post on it right now) but every time I try to boot it normally it blue-screens (and sometimes when I try to boot in safe-mode it hangs on startup on agp440.sys, a graphics card error). Assuming it is my software and not my hardware, I want to try and install a new operating system and see if it works. I'm currently running Windows XP. Ideally I'd like to skip Vista and go straight to 7, but if my specs aren't high enough then I can settle for Vista (I've been running XP for a little over five years now). Here's my specs:

Dell Optiplex GX270
Pentium 4, 2.8GHz
1.75 GB RAM
40 GB HDD
40 GB HDD (external)
NVIDA GeForce 6200 (I believe 256 MB VRAM)
-
Everything else is default for the GX270

So what are my options here? I guess I can try reinstalling XP, but I really think I'm due for a full-on upgrade.

Sad face... OK, let's pretend I tried to install Vista. How would that go? Would it run at all?

i personally dont recommend Vista, one of the worst OS ever (for me at least lol), also from my experience Vista is a memory hog, Windows XP is your best bet, to run smoothly without problems, at least that's what i would install with you specs.

i personally though windows me was the worst of them...

did you try to do a system restore while in safe mode?

If were taking the older OS into account then yeah i agree the Windows ME did suck, but i still think that Vista is not to great either. I personally always recommend XP or 7 depending on someone's specs.

Yeah, I did, it didn't seem to work. I also updated Windows in Safe Mode; I got it to work yesterday doing that, but today it happened again. And again, it works after updating in Safe Mode, though I'm afraid it will crap out again tomorrow. But I guess I'll be sticking with XP after all. I think I'm just going to reinstall it. Thanks guys.

Normally I'd say Windows 7 64-bit, but with that GX270 - stick with Windows XP as the other features will kill your pc. Anything 3 years or younger, I automatically suggest windows 7 64bit!

Recommending Windows Vista is already bad enough on its own, especially on older systems. :(

You can probably run Windows 7 even better than XP with that amount of memory.
I installed Windows 7 Ultimate on a computer that had worse specs than that (1GB RAM only instead of 1.75), and a CPU that was running at 2 GHz instead of 2.8, when I returned the computer they said it never ran that fast before, and they were able to do more things with it afterwards than before.
