SEGA horrific terrible advertisements.
Back in the 80's and 90's the trend was the more radical you were, the better. Game companies took this to heart and came up with the worst ads I've ever seen. There was a time where SEGA just figured everyone wanted to pretend they were masturbating a robot and went from there. Why they did this, I can't possibly understand.

Re: SEGA horrific terrible advertisements.
SEGA back then had a very similar image to Microsoft now: they were the hardcore adult alternative to Nintendo's colorful and cartoonish characters. And while SEGA certainly had a few of these cartoons of their own (obviously Sonic comes to mind) most of their reputation at the time came from sports and anime games (at a time when only adults could afford to watch imported anime). What they were doing was trying to appeal to their adult audiences, only they were doing it with cheesy early 90's "mature" themed jokes and ads.
It's really no different from how games that are geared towards adults are advertised for today, only it's just a different flavor of advertisement. Look at Black Ops 2's trailers (particularly the Oliver North ones) and you'll get an eye full of stuff only an adult would enjoy. Well, back then, for some reason, adults thought masturbation jokes were funny... So that's how SEGA advertised.
