Happy 4th!
i,m from the netherlands too and there is no celebration here :011: but i wish all Americans a very nice 4th of July :029:
Indeed! Happy 4th of July and all other custom belief celebration. Bear hugs for all!
It's a pretty big holiday over here in the US. I think the closest equivalent in the UK in terms of scale and flashiness would be Guy Fawkes Night on November 5th, though for completely different reasons; if I remember correctly, Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the parliament building sometime in the early 17th century (the exact year escapes me) and was arrested on November 5th, while July 4th 1776 was the date that the American Declaration of Independence was signed (though the Revolutionary War between America and Britain wouldn't end until 1783).
The Netherlands equivalent would probably be Queen's Day (or is it "King's Day" now that Willem-Alexander is king?) and falls on the birthday of the ruler at the time (Willem-Alexander's birthday being April 27th). The Norwegian equivalent would be Constitution Day on May 17th. The Mexican equivalent would be Anniversary of the Revolution on November 20th. The German equivalent would be German Unity Day on October 3rd.
Anyway, there's a culture lesson for my 4th of July gift. For any who didn't understand before, now we have a reference point for the bigger national holidays of a few of the countries that most of our members are from. All in all, I'd say the July 4th celebration in the US is closest to the November 5th celebration in the UK, as both are primarily celebrated at night and with big flashy displays (US with fireworks and UK with bonfires). But the scale is still similar to the other holidays I mentioned (particularly Queen's/King's Day and Constitution Day).
