Fable Anniversary - How to Decompresss Your Save
Hey guys, here is the Tutorial for how to get your file able to be manually Hex Edited or load it in my Editor.
REQUIREMENTS:
Horizon
USB (formatted to an xbox 360 Memory card with your save on it)
Offzip and Packzip (I don't use the UI version, so it's not needed)
Step 1:
Plug in your USB into your Computer and open Horizon
Step 2:
Extract your Fable Save to a BACKUP Folder
Step 3:
Open your Save in Horizon and click the Contents Tab, then right click the file in there and select Extract (I am using the Hero1 Manual - Save1 file for this Tutorial)
http://imageshack.com/a/img713/4413/hesc.png
Step 4:
Open up your Command Prompt by going to Start>Run and type in "cmd"
Step 5:
Drag offzip.exe into the cmd screen, press SPACE BAR, type -a, SPACE, drag your Hero1 Manual - Save1 file, SPACE, drag an empty Folder, SPACE, type 0, press ENTER
http://imageshack.com/a/img198/6016/l2j8.png
Step 6:
Open the Folder you used in Step 5 and delete the 1kb file, then select the other file in there (mine is 00000133.dat) and press Ctrl+X, go back to the folder that has offzip/packzip in it and press Ctrl+V
http://imageshack.com/a/img845/8584/8oig.png
Step 7:
Drag offzip.exe into cmd, press SPACE, type -a, SPACE, drag 00000133.dat, SPACE, drag the Folder, SPACE, type 0, ENTER
http://imageshack.com/a/img191/1728/ru8b.png
Step 8:
You should now have 8-15 files in the Folder now, you can either try opening each one into my Editor until you get a file that loads, or you can open each .dat file into Hex Workshop and search for CTCHeroExperience as Text (my .dat file that worked was 000033a7.dat)
http://imageshack.com/a/img268/256/y90w.png
Step 9:
After you are done modding the Save, drag packzip.exe into cmd, press SPACE, type -o, SPACE, type 0x33a7 (whatever your .dat file is called without the 0's), SPACE, drag 000033a7.dat, SPACE, drag 00000133.dat, ENTER
http://imageshack.com/a/img811/5483/lzpx.png
Step 10:
Drag packzip.exe into cmd, press SPACE, type -o, SPACE, type 0x133 (whatever your .dat file is called without the 0's), SPACE, drag 00000133.dat, drag Save, ENTER
http://imageshack.com/a/img200/1483/rhes.png
Step 11:
Go back to Horizon and in the Contents of your Save right click the Hero1 Manual - Save1 file and select "Replace", select the newly modded Hero1 Manual - Save1 file
Step 12:
Press the "Save, Rehash and Resign" button
Step 13:
PLAY AND ENJOY!!!

Re: Fable Anniversary - How to Decompresss Your Save
I'm having some problems :003: I've already done all the steps twice without problems and it worked. But now, the third time, arrived to the step 7 it gives me 46 files, not 8-15 like the first two times. I found the file .dat the editor can load and I modified the file normally, I continued the steps and put the save on usb. However, when i load the save on xbox, console instantly freez :011: Why?

It's because the Fable saves (goes for all Fable games) are very very fragile. You will have to keep trying and also try playing a bit more and try again.

Re: Fable Anniversary - How to Decompresss Your Save
Idle I sent you a PM but I had problems with messages and posts so I don't know if it arrived. Anyway I tried again but the result doesn't change... Always 47-48 files and, if I load the save, the console freeze... What's the problem? The steps are all correct :014:

I noticed that if you have like 40+ files then there will be at least 3 (maybe more) files that you have to mod. Also I got all your messages, just been busy.

How should I mod them? I mean, once I modify one and save the values, others modifiable files don't have the same value? Should I increase it for each file?
Edit: Now I tried again and I have 54 files... It seems that every time they increase :064:

Re: Fable Anniversary - How to Decompresss Your Save
I get quite a lot of files when decompress the 2nd time too. And there is only 1 DAT file, when I open it I get an unexpected error in the tool, I can click CONTINUE but all my values are flat 0.

Re: Fable Anniversary - How to Decompresss Your Save
idle would there be any way to morph the hero to a different npc like you could using fable explorer on pc for fable tlc the reason i ask is inside of my files i found the same id of the file that was used to morph the hero in fable tlc

Re: Fable Anniversary - How to Decompresss Your Save
Just read the full tutorial and understood the GUI program isn't needed, which is awesome.
I get around 50 files when decompressing for the 2nd time, but it's usually just the biggest DAT file that you open. Worked 100% first time for me, thanking you kindly Idle for this awesome tut!

Re: Fable Anniversary - How to Decompresss Your Save
Idle I'm sorry if I'm causing you problems, but I'm no longer able to mod the save :003: It's like the 10th try, but nothing. I've an initial file of 212Kb (result of step 5). When I offzip it too (step 7), come out the beauty of 70 .dat files... Between all these files, only one can be modified. Despite numerous attempts, 360 keeps freez :017:

Re: Fable Anniversary - How to Decompresss Your Save
I appear to be having the same issue as others. The first unzip works fine and I get a big file and a small file. Then when I unzip the second file I get over 60 files like VAP and NFC, no DAT. I've tried saving my game into a new slot, extracting from horizon a couple times, and unzipping again but still same results.

I don't think so, I can't remember if it's the same process or not. I think you only had to use Offzip once on the save. Not sure though lol, been awhile since I modded that game :)

Ya but the checksum for Fable 2 and 3 are tricky. It's in it's own file. It's easier to mod the 2 and 3 with the Editor that floating around here.

Careful with that game, while the save editor does work, it eventually corrupts the save, I believe it has something to do with the recompression process, Lionhead has a very intolerant save I/O process that doesn't play nice with artificial changes.
I've observed the same thing happening with fable anniversary but the save system is a lot more flexible, when you notice the save has been corrupted you simply save to a new slot and delete the offending files, of course if you fail to notice before leaving the game, you're screwed.

Re: Fable Anniversary - How to Decompresss Your Save
Then, after using it a few times, save can not longer be modified? Is that so?

Who said anything about that?
I only noticed it once on FA when I was playing around with stuff that didn't actually change anything, but the point is it did happen and it can in theory happen to any compression using game, providing they lack the tolerance for it (xcom has tolerance out the ass for it, fairchilds toolkit doesn't actually use the right compression level, but the game doesn't mind, his words).
Even if it does happen, when you write to a brand new save slot the corruption is purged, it's a flaw in the file not the game memory so it doesn't pass between files.
You'll notice it's corrupt when it starts saying stupid stuff like the year is 2067 etc, just immediately make a new save slot and delete the dodgy ones when you get around to it, no problem really when you have 2 autosave slots to fall back on, unless you modded those.

It doesn't tell me that the file is corrupt, simply when I try to load the save from USB on xbox, console freez. Maybe I just didn't understand? I should just keep playing, save in a new slot and try to mod this one?

Yeah it will just freeze, xcom does the same. It's a lack of foresight or simply not caring on the devs part, it's entirely related to reading something unexpected in the save file, which can happen when it's not been compressed in an expected manner, really freaks it out.
You may be able to repair that save through some manner of ritual container transfusion (like dark souls) but frankly I would delete it and work off of your next save, which you will of course backup beforehand.
One thing I recommend doing out of habit is the moment you succesfully load a modified save in the game, make a new slot and discard the old one at your earliest convenience. No chance of corruption. If memory serves, fable 3 only gave you one slot, which is why you were doomed to corruption, here we have loads of slots to play with so we can avoid the problem.
