Developer NetherRealm Studios and publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment have announced that they're bringing back a few familiar elements to the Mortal Kombat series in this year's reboot. Remember the "Test Your Might" challeneges? Those are making a comeback along with many others in the new Challenge Tower mode.

The Challenege Tower mode puts players in 300 different missions where they have to use their mastery of the game's mechanics to complete a specific task. Its not just a bunch of minigames though. The Challenge Tower missions will also mirror the game's focus on combat. Along with Test Your Might, other challenges include defending yourself against a horde of zombies as well as a Test Your Luck challenge that can greatly affect an upcoming fight by adding modifiers such as randomly selected opponents and damage-delaing terrain. You can learn more about it in the video below.

In addition, Warner Bros. and NetherRealm have announced that a timed Mortal Kombat demo will be available as a timed PlayStation 3 exclusive on the PlayStation Network soon. PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to download the demo starting March 8 while non-PS Plus members will gain access to it starting March 15. The demo will also be released for Xbox 360 owners at a later date.

The demo puts the fight into the hands of the gamers and offers them the chance to master iconic Mortal Kombat warriors Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Mileena and Johnny Cage in two of the games most renowned arenas - the Living Forest and the Pit. The demo features the arcade ladder for one or two players.

Mortal Kombat is slated for release on April 19 in North America and April 22 in Europe, although publisher Warner Bros. is currently facing a problem in Australia after Mortal Kombat's fatalities were deemed too disturbing for gamers in the region. Warner Bros. plans to appeal the decision and resubmit the game without any cuts to the Australian Classification Board.

Mortal Kombat will be available on PS3 and Xbox 360.
