I am a little confused because there are many linux versions, hope an experienced linux user can help me a little.

Simply ask yourself what you will be doing on the machine and also if you want to dick around for hours on end or you just want something to tweak.
I'd use xubuntu, most of the initial installations taken care of and its xfce desktop is small and fast, you can delete what you don't want and its repo is that of ubuntus so you can update all you like.
Arch linux and gentoo are for if you have a 'gotta go fast' mentality, and like compiling everything, personally thats a no.

My xubuntu boots in about 5-10 seconds and shuts down even faster, im also booting backtrack and windows 7.
Securities out the window i guess but it does the job, i would recommend Debian by itself but the prospect of having install almost everything your damn self... nope.

Then again i hardly qualify as experienced, i still google basic commands, its more of a reluctance to remember them than anything.

Re: New Notebook/Netbook but which Linux?

There are so many linux distributions that its a hard thing to say. Each one is a little different and suits a different person a little more. My suggestion is to try new ones and see what you like the best. To find out what the latest and most popular distros go here. My two favorites are Sabayon and Fedora. Currently my laptop has Sabayon Linux 9 XFCE. I am not too fond of Gnome 3 so I am bias towards a version without Gnome 3, if you go for Fedora go with XFCE or Fedora 14 Gnome (last version with Gnome 2.x), if you try Sabayon go with XFCE.

thank you mojo 4 that greats links,

tested the last days a few linux version´s and i think i will use fedora 17 64bit, that was the only version that I liked.

next question i got is, it is possible or is there a way on fedora to compile trainer xex files or i need to use a windows virtual machine?

I cant imagine Visual Studio and the Xbox 360 SDK installing onto WINE. My suggestion is to use Virtualbox and install a windows xp onto it. You should be able to yum install it or install it from your package manager.

As superuser (root) do this command and it should install Virtualbox.
    Code:
    yum install virtualbox
