Gran Turismo Producer Talks Gran Turismo 6, Vita

    www.ign.com

“We’re always aiming for the latest technology and the latest expression.”

Gran Turismo has been exceptionally successful for Sony since the series first launched on the PSone back in 1998. As of the end of last year, the series has sold an astounding 65 million units across four platforms – PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PSP – and it is, indeed, the best-selling PlayStation series of all-time.

But when Gran Turismo 5 finally came to the PlayStation 3 in 2010 after a series of significant delays, it disappointed both critically and commercially when compared to other games in the core franchise. While Gran Turismo 5 totes a Metacritic score in the mid-80s and has sold over 7 million copies (making it the best-selling game on PS3), it came in well below the other entries in the primary series in both units sold and critical score. These facts speak absolute volumes about how popular the franchise is and how high developer Polyphony Digital has set the bar.

It’s that popularity that has millions of gamers wondering just what’s next for the series. We’ve known that Gran Turismo 6 has been in development since 2010, but we know very little else about the game, including whether it’s destined for PlayStation 3 or perhaps Sony’s next-generation console. Likewise, we’ve heard rumblings about Gran Turismo on PlayStation Vita, mostly in the form of a survey from Sony gauging gamers’ interest in such a title.

But now, according to Andriasang, famed Gran Turismo producer Kazunori Yamauchi has spoken a bit more about Gran Turismo 6, as well as the possibility of the series making an appearance on Vita. Yamauchi’s comments were given at a Gran Turismo 5-related Q&A session held in China.

According to Andriasang, “Yamauchi said that he’s been working on the framework for [Gran Turismo 6] since immediately after work on GT5 finished.” Yamauchi himself noted that, in regard to Gran Turismo 6, “We’re always aiming for the latest technology and the latest expression.”

On the PlayStation Vita front, Yamauchi is quoted as saying that “if we were to make [Gran Turismo on Vita], we’d like to make use of the ability to play anywhere and the ability to use 3G at any time,” both features that would surely be enticing to fans of the series looking to take Gran Turismo’s polished racing experiences on the go.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any other developments concerning either game, and one still remains in a hypothetical (or at the very least, unconfirmed) stage. In the meantime, we’re simply left to hope and speculate. Hey... speaking of hope and speculation, maybe Gran Turismo 6 is one of the two games rumored to be debuting at Gamescom in mere weeks?
