I would say for the best:
Thousand Arms
Grandia 2
Chrono Cross or Trigger
Wish didn't exist:
Ephemeral Fantasia - Dear god that had /no/ direction whatsoever.. even the menu's changed control scheme as you navigated them.
As far as current gen console though, I have to give it up to Lost Odyssey. The only really good one on the new gen that wasn't trying to do something new, or perfect a real time battle system. Good old fashioned turn based combat.. it's all I dream of.
Champions Return To Arms
I say is the best RPG i have ever played also my Lizard was AWESOME
There is more but i dont feel like including them
Hey, do you guess remember Blue Dragon? That's like if they took a simple 16bit story (Breath of Fire comes to mind pretty hard) and brought it to life on a current gen consoles. And, speaking of which, I guess I should add Breath of Fire to the list as well.
I didn't see the "wish didn't exist" bit, so I'll add that too. I don't think FFXIII should exist. I've never returned a game after only an hour of play, but I did just that with FFXIII.
The RPG that actually doesn't exist but I wish did anyway? Chrono Break. I would play Chrono Break nonstop for an entire year!

Final Fantasy 7 will always be my favorite. The best Final Fantasy for me. I tried others later but could never get into them.

Best are:
Final Fantasy 7, 8 & 10 (older ones are too outdated, 9's main character was a cat thing, 11 was online (I have a life!!), 12's main character I wasn't sure if it was male or female.... terrible game & the new ones are just too confusing, even though im playing them for the beauty of it)
Star Oceans were nice games
Koudelka was a rare not majorly known nice game
Skyes of Arcadia was fun
Kingdom Hearts is great with my little boy (Disney & Final Fantasy...Genius!)
Legend Of Dragoon
Breath Of Fire 3
Grandia 1 (Wish we saw Justin grown up!)
Phantasy Star Online was the only one on Dreamcast I cared about
Dirge of Cerberus was a decent spin off
Wish never was made:
Either:
They designed better characters for Final Fantasy 12
or
They didn't make those dissidia games and made something incredible trying to mix a couple of the games together.
(Erh?..lets like say they lost there memories and ah...they have to battle together.., what a load of crap!)
or
Final Fantasy tactics was like turning the game in to chess, crap

I remember Phantasy Star Online and how much people liked that one for Dreamcast. Another good one.
