Microsoft says Kinect rumor completely untrue
Microsoft denied this week earlier rumors that it was working on a firmware update for the Kinect peripheral that would quadruple the accuracy of the sensor. According to CVG, Microsoft said the report was "completely unsubstantiated." The rumor said the Kinect camera's practicalresolution would be bumped up from 320x240 to 640x480.
The added resolution would allow Kinect to detect finger movements, adding to the peripheral's usability and opening the door for new types of games that could involve air guitar or playing the piano, among other games. It had allegedly constrained the available USB bandwidth for Kinect to avoid clashing with other peripherals but had found a way to widen the connection and the maximum resolution as a result.
