Gearbox boss: we'll "kill" Borderlands if we don't trust other developers with it

How do you go about slaying a franchise as well-loved as Borderlands? According to Gearbox president Randy Pitchford, you refuse to let anybody else develop for it. Hence the decision to put 2K Australia in charge of the recently unveiled Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, which also means that Gearbox has a hand free to work on new IP.

"The best way for us to kill Borderlands would be for us to not trust other people with it," Pitchford told OXM Australia's Paul Taylor in an interview, perusable in the Australian and UK editions of OXM, which are on sale now. The interview also features in the next US issue of OXM, which is now going out to subscribers, and will be available in stores from 29th April.

"Internally at Gearbox a lot of our effort is going towards creating new IP that we haven't announced yet," Pitchford added. "But we want to see and play more Borderlands! I really like the awesome imprint that 2K Australia has left on the world. I think it'll open future projects up to them.

"I don't know if it's possible for anyone to live up to the high expectations of the fans, but 2K Australia is pouring its heart and soul into it."

The Pre-Sequel is set between the events of Borderlands 1 and Borderlands 2, as the name cunningly implies, and stars four, newly playable characters from previous games. Much of it takes place on Pandora's moon, where you'll have to contend with low gravity, ice bullets and laser beams, among other things. The below gameplay trailer should help you fill in the picture. The new game is exclusive to last generation consoles, both because these are cheaper to work with and because a majority of Borderlands players haven't upgraded to Xbox One or PS4. "The fans have been playing on Xbox 360, and we want to keep those players happy," studio head Tony Lawrence told Log in our preview.

As for Gearbox's other projects, we've known for a while that the developer has games in the can for next generation consoles. There's also Furious Four to consider - originally announced as a Brothers in Arms spin-off for last gen hardware, now a really "cool" new IP of enigmatic status.

One project that isn't on the cards - at the time of writing, anyway - is a new numbered Borderlands, though Pitchford is clearly mindful of fan demand. What do you think of the Pre-Sequel so far? How about that Tales from the Borderlands adventure they're making over at Telltale Games?
