PS4 Jailbreak 2017: The latest status

2017 has been here for a few weeks now, and it’s high time we did a recap of the PS4 Jailbreak scene.
So far in 2017, PS4 Jailbreaks have been confirmed to work up to firmware 4.05 included. However, nothing has been publicly released for 4.xx firmwares. The latest firmware that has been publicly hacked is firmware 1.76.
In other words, if you want to Jailbreak your PS4 in 2017, you’ll need to get your hands on a PS4 running firmware 1.76, or be extremely well connected with the hackers who have access to the 4.05 jailbreak.
As for firmware 4.07, the latest at the time of this writing, nothing’s even been publicly demonstrated at the moment. Once again, we need to warn people against scammy websites that promise a 4.07 PS4 Jailbreak: typically these sites will ask you to fill a survey in order to download the “Jailbreak”. If you’re lucky to not get a virus in the process, we can guarantee with 100% accuracy that the file you download will not be a 4.07 PS4 Jailbreak. You will, however, have made the owners of the website rich during the process of answering surveys for which they get paid.

If you are running firmware 1.76 or lower

Congratulations. Your PS4 is Jailbreakable. But, honestly, if you own a PS4 at such a low firmware, you already knew that, didn’t you? You can run unsigned code on your PS4 through the dlclose exploit, and this includes running cool stuff such as Linux. Head over to this page for details.
If you are running firmware 4.05 or lower

Hang in there! Several hacking groups have confirmed they have access to a 4.05 PS4 Jailbreak, including Chaitin Tech, FailOverflow, and other renowned PS4 hackers.
That’s good news. The bad news is that none of them have announced they would release anything. With the first official demonstration of a Jailbreak done in October last year, the chances seem to be slimming down that we’ll actually see a release. I was honestly thinking something would have leaked by now. Nevertheless, keeping your PS4 on 4.05 or lower is your best bet at the moment. What I’ve personally done is buy a PS4 Slim, and keep my PS4 Phat on firmware 4.05 (it is now collecting dust until a hack surfaces publicly).
If you are running firmware 4.06 or higher

Nothing’s been announced or hinted at for these firmwares at the moment. The best thing you can do for yourself is avoid scammy websites that pretend they have a PS4 Jailbreak for you. We debunked one such website here, and they all use the same techniques. Spread the word.

If you’re thinking of buying a secondary purposes, you can get an (expensive) console running on firmware 1.76, or get either PS4 Pro or PS4 slim which as of January 2017 are pretty much guaranteed to come with firmwares lower than 4.05. Note that this doesn’t mean you will be able to hack them right away (see the “4.05 or below” section above)
What about a downgrade?

There is no known technique to downgrade a PS4. Technically, if a downgrade was doable nowadays on a given firmware, it would pretty much imply kernel access, meaning the console would be hackable anyway. In other words, if a downgrade was possible on your PS4, you would actually not need it.
