    How it works
x360key consists of 2 parts, a motherboard and a remote.

The motherboard connects to the SATA bus inside the Xbox 360, and sits between the drive and the Xbox 360 motherboard. x360key is a full-fledged computer system running embedded Linux. It is capable of many things such as
    - Emulating the Xbox 360 DVD drive
    - Reading USB hard drives and other USB media with various file systems
    - Updating itself and other hardware from USB media
    - Communicating with the remote and other external USB devices
    - And a lot more! (embedded Web server and Wifi connectivity for example)

The remote is a simple yet stylish piece of hardware that features an OLED display and 3 buttons. It connects to the x360key motherboard via a high speed USB2 connection. It also has USB for connecting USB hard drives and other devices. The OLED and buttons are used to control various aspects of x360key. It is also used for browsing attached USB media devices and launching games.

    FAQ

    Configuring xKey - Fats
xKey requires a dump of the original firmware from your drive. This is copied to the xKey's SD card, when the xKey boots the firmware file its analysed, the drive type is identified and the drive key etc. are extracted.

    If you have CFW
You should have a backup of the OFW (or all the information to recreate one) and it is this file that is used to configure xKey. There is no need to reflash your drive with OFW.

If you have a stock drive
a dump must be obtained using available tools (we recommend the Maximus Lizard 360).

    Configuring xKey - Slims
xKey requires the file set (dummy.bin etc.) that can be created with available tools, these are copied to the xKey's SD card. When the xKey boots, the files are analysed, the drive type is identified and the drive key etc. are extracted.

    If you have CFW
You should have a backup of the required files and they are used to configure xKey. There is no need to reflash your drive with OFW

If you have a stock drive
a dump must be obtained using available tools (we recommend the Maximus Lizard 360).

    Firmware Dumping
At launch xKey can't dump the drive firmware. Updates, planned for shortly after release, will allow xKey to perform this task for you. There is no need to flash your drive and 0225+ owners can enjoy all the benefits of xKey without the hassle of swapping PCBs or waiting for an unlock hack
    Different modes
    Emulation Mode:

You start your console by pressing the power button to get into the emulation mode. This mode allows you to select your games via the xK3y remote with a connected USB drive and launch them.

    Like this:

    1. You start your console by pressing the power button (USB drive connected to the xK3y remote).
    2. You press eject on the console to open the tray (tray status open), which won't actually happen.
    3. Via the xK3y you navigate to "select game" and choose your hard drive which might take a moment, don't panic, this is because a few drives turn off automatically, so they need a while to start up at the beginning. Once the display shows "HDD connected" you are good to go.
    4. You confirm your selected game with the center button on your xK3y remote and the press eject again on your Xbox 360.
    5. In case the game doesn't launch automatically, it's because you might have deactivated this feature in your dashboard options. In that case you have to do it on your own via the disc icon.

Should "AP 2.5 failed" appear on your screen, you have to make sure to update your xK3y or transfer the "dae.bin" in your games folder. Last thing (most likely) won't be necessary anymore in the coming days, so an update should be enough.
In case that doesn't help, chances are high that your backup is faulty.
Verifying the ISO with ABGX might help.

    Passthru Mode:

In order to deactivate the xK3y and beeing able to normally use the disc drive, you need the passthru mode. You activate it by turning on your console via the eject button.
The passthru mode deactivates the xK3y to allow the use of original Xbox 360 discs. That means that you can use your previously backupped discs and start them with your drive again.
So a safe usage of Xbox Live is given, thanks to the passthru mode, since the timing of the drive is more accurate due to the hardware / software combination in comparison to a software-only-solution like a hacked drive firmware. That means, even in emulation mode you should be safer than with a hacked DVD-Rom firmware, which in the end doesn't matterat all, since nobody can guarantee you to be 100% secure on XBOX Live.
At least not with a cash-bach-guarantee.
    Navigation & functionality
This section is all about the emulation mode, since there is nothing more to say about the passthru mode.
Xbox 360 and Xbox 1 (if supported by the Xbox 1 emulator) games go into the following folder:

    games

which is located in the root of the HDD as .ISO files (without .DVD file).
For those who want their games to be sorted by genres or alphabetically can do that as well, that means, sub folders within the "games" folder are recognised as well.

    Example:

    hdd/games/adventure/assassins_creed_brotherhood.iso
    hdd/games/shooter/call_of_duty_black_ops.iso

    or

    hdd/games/a/assassins_creed_brotherhood.iso
    hdd/games/c/call_of_duty_black_ops.iso

The "dae.bin" contains AP 2.5/ 2.6 information, which should be integrated into xK3ys firmware soon.
Currently all Xbox 360 work, including XGD3 (Xbox Game Disc 3), AP 2.5 AP 2.5 and multi disc games. Xbox 1 games weren't tested.
XGD3 % AP 2.5 games are supprted and work flawlessly.

    Following games were tested:

    XGD3 Games:

    Gears of War 3
    Warhammer 40.000 Space Marine
    Driver San Francisco

    AP 2.5 Games:

    Call of Duty Black Ops
    Halo Reach
    Assassin Creed Brotherhood

    Multi Disc Games:

    LA Noire
    Dead Space 2

All tested games worked flawlessly with the latest xK3y firmware v.1.02. When multi disc games ask you to change the disc, you can simply mount the next disc with the xK3y remote and continue playing.
Don't forget to verify and patch your games with ABGX360. Sadly XGD3 games are currently not supported by ABGX.
The usage is by the way as easy as the installation, no kidding!
In case you are using an USB hub (yes, that works as well) make sure to know on which drive you stored your games.
And don't forget, taht there are certain drives which strain the USB port a lot more than others, so consider a USB Y cable or another power source to avoid the problem.
    Updates & Recovery
It's fairly easy to update the xK3y. You simply take the rootfs (the linux root file system), uImage (the linux kernel plus InitRamFS) and copy both files onto the USB drive.
Once you turn on your Xbox 360, both files (footfs & uImage) will be copied onto the microSD card inside the xK3y.
The xK3y checks the files first before anything gets transfered onto the microSD card to see if there have been any changes made at all.
In case something goes wrong, like a power shortage on your 360, you can still recover the firmware on the microSD card, with the software on your PC.
FPGA updates are also applied via a USB drive. FPGA updates add new hardware functions to the xK3y. To update it, you need a file called "FPGA.VME (upper or lower case shouldn't be of importance).
An FPGA update takes around 50-60 seconds. Whatever you update, you have to restart your Xbox 360 to make sure the xK3y makes use other update and work correctly.
I never had to use the recovery mode during those 3 firmware updates that I installed about 3 million times, in order to kill that thing.
Downgrading is also possible, since (as said before) the xK3y checks the update files for the differences, so a downgrade isn't a problem.

It's not actually safe to play online, it's been confirmed by c4e that it can get a console banned but if you don't care about online then it's a great product :D

nothing is really safe online, not even custom firmware, we always take a risk while playing on live weather is with a flashed drive or this.

    Re: x360K3y

    X360Key Inteview

Interview to the x360Key main developer: the product will let you play all your Xbox 360 games from any USB drive!
    Exciting stuff indeed.
Lets get this thing going, enjoy!

    • Q - What products have the x360Key Team developed in the past?
X360Key, Wode, Wiikey, Drivekey, d2pro, xenoGC, Qoob, Crystal Chip, Aladdin XT/XenoFX series mod chips for Xbox 1.

    • Q - How long has x360Key been in development now?
      Approximately 6 months.

    • Q - Will x360Key work with all Xbox 360 consoles, including Slim?
Yes and as new drive versions appear we will add support for them too.

    • Q - How do you install x360Key, is it easy?
Very easy, it's Plug 'n' Play, if you can dump the firmware from your drive then you can install the X360key.

    • Q - Both PS3 and Wii software backup loaders have compatibility problems with some game titles when loading from hard drive, due to firmware version requirements or protection in general, how is x360Key in that regard?
This is where drive emulations really come into their own, because the console sees a real drive with a real disk inserted there is no need for any patching or hacking. Everything 'just works' as normal.

    • Q - In relation to x360Key; what exactly is the Xbox 360 DVD drive needed for?
The X360key offers two modes, emulation & passthru. In emulation mode the drive is not required at all, in passthru mode the drive works as normal.

    • Q - Does the Xbox 360 DVD drive need any custom firmware flashed to work with X360key?
No, quite the opposite in fact. You need a dump of the original drive firmware to configure X360key. The good news is that's all you need to configure X360key.

    • Q - How safe is x360Key on Xbox Live compared to iXtreme?

While we take every care to accurately emulate the XBox's drive we do not recommend using X360key with XBL at launch. Shortly after launch we will release updates that address this.
Also, plenty of people have been banned while using CFW and there are still issues even with the latest iXtreme. For example, in order to pass the new Slim FW checks a lot of data has to be swapped around (C4E's so called 'rootkit'). This takes time and the checks take a lot longer to perform than they would on a stock drive. In the worst case it takes CFW takes 5 times longer to perform the check (15 seconds instead of 2-3). If MS have noticed this then it is quite possible that every Slim owner using CFW has already been marked for a ban.
      [
      See timing graph for details.]
By comparison X360key features a powerful ARM9 CPU that can perform the FW checks *faster* than the real drive running stock FW. We have the horsepower & the storage capacity to handle anything the future brings.

    • Q - How will the new XGD3 disc format (eg. Halo Reach) be handled by x360Key, any special backup considerations?
We do not anticipate any problems with XGD3, game ISOs are stored on HDD and are not limited by the capacity of a DL DVDR. X360key supports any number of HDDs upto 2 TB in size.

    • Q - Regarding backups in general, most gamers use abgx360 to verify their backup ISO images, is that still recommended with x360Key?
abgx360 verifies that the ISO is an accurate backup of a game disk. Whether an ISO is burned to a disk or used by X360key it must be an accurate backup. For this reason gamers should continue to abgx360 to verify their ISOs.

    • Q - Besides official updates, are there any features of the x360Key that will be open for the user to customize?
We have no plans at this time.

    • Q - For lazy guys like me, will there be any possibility to select games from the comfort of a sofa?
We do, however, have plans for wireless control of X360key.

    • Q - I'm really eager to get my hands on one of these, when can we expect x360Key to be released?
Current plan is for a July launch and we are on track.

    • Q - Is there anything else you would like to tell us about x360Key at this point?
Stay tuned for more exciting announcements
