The PS3 already has different data storage alternatives available to it, but with all the content you can stockpile into the system, sometimes it's not enough. Soon, Sony will introduce yet another way for you to save your precious data.
Currently, we can backup data via external storage devices. You can also give yourself larger space by swapping out an HDD with something bigger that your unit came with. Yep, you can do so without voiding the warranty. That's more than you can say about the competition, which wants their system to use only the stuff that they made.
According to a report from Kotaku, Sony will soon be providing another way for you to manage your data. After external and internal storage options, what's next? Thin air.
The new initiative will allow players to make use of cloud storage. This means that you'll be able to upload your game saves onto their servers without you having to rely on any storage media. Yeah, it's like saving your data into thin air. It was rumored way back in 2009 that such a feature will be introduced, and it appears the rumor mill had it right.
Its obvious advantage would obviously be the space you save by using Sony's storage, not yours. Since the service will also be tied to your PlayStation Network account, you'll also be able to download your save data into different systems. There will be security measures in place, naturally, but Sony hasn't detailed these.
They did point out, however, that because saving games to the cloud "will allow save data with the copy prohibited attribute to be copied into the online storage," developers will have the option of barring the use of such data for their games if it would prove problematic.
Sony will call this "Online Saving" and it be available with firmware v3.60. One small note though - this one will be available only to PlayStation Plus subscribers.
